Southwell Racecourse is set in the East Midlands countryside in the market town of Newark-on-Trent. The course hosts both jump and flat racing, the flat action being both turf and all weather. It is the only all weather course in the United Kingdom that still uses a fibresand surface.
The course is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom holding races all year round that total up to well over 60 meetings.
On the all weather track the centre of the track is generally thought to be quicker than being on the rails in the straight. Due to the nature of the fibresand which is quite deep the ability to stay the distance and horse with good stamina will have a slight advantage.
The most successful professional female jockey Hayley Turner grew up locally to this course and was employed by a local trainer. She made here first public ride here on Markellis in March 2000.
